Students Serve at Heart of Christ Clinic Gala

Serving Others

Our students are encouraged to recognize the needs of others, use their gifts to help, and understand that serving others is part of living their faith.

On Thursday, September 17, students from SCA’s Gianna Molla Pro-Life Club and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) had the opportunity to put that approach to service into practice at the Heart of Christ Clinic’s 4th Annual Fundraising Gala at St. John’s Resort.

The Heart of Christ Clinic, originally opened and operated out of the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit, provides care and support to women and families. The clinic’s work reflects the Catholic commitment to protecting human life and serving women and children with compassion and practical support.

SCA students were invited to attend the gala and assist throughout the evening. They served as event guides, welcomed and assisted guests, and helped before Mass and following the Silent Auction.

The evening’s program, A Mother’s Love, included a presentation by Fr. John Shi, who shared the extraordinary story of his mother’s courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love in the face of China’s one-child policy. His story offered students an opportunity to consider how faith can shape the decisions we make and how one person’s courage can have an impact on others.

For members of the Gianna Molla Pro-Life Club, the evening connected directly to their work at SCA. The club gives students an opportunity to learn about the dignity of every human life and the responsibility to protect and serve those who are vulnerable. HOSA students were also able to see how their interest in healthcare connects with caring for others and serving their communities.

Opportunities like this are part of how St. Catherine of Siena Academy helps girls develop as women of faith, leadership, and service. Students are not only learning about the Catholic faith and the dignity of human life. They are given opportunities to practice those lessons by serving others, taking responsibility, and engaging with people who are doing this work every day.

We are grateful to the Heart of Christ Clinic for welcoming our students and to Leisa Marie Carzon, bestselling author, educator, healthcare administrator, and pro-life leader, for her support of SCA students and programs and for securing sponsorship of the school’s table. Dr. Carzon is the author of Sister, Soldier, Surgeon, the story of Sr. Dede Byrne, whose life of service has inspired many through her work in medicine, the military, and religious life.
